Xunantunich – “Maiden of the Rock” or Stone Lady is one of the most impressive and easiest accessible archaeological sites situated along the banks of the Mopan River.
Its impressive architecture, panoramic views and easy access has made this site a favorite to visit. From around the early Pre-classic 600BC Xunantunich was already in its settlement phase on the western edge of the greater Belize River Valley.
Its hinterlands like Cahal Pech on the Macal River, Buena Vista del Cayo on the Belize River, Blackman Eddy, and Benque Viejo site and las Ruinas de Arenal were already trading with this magnificent thriving city. Towards the terminal classic something terribly went wrong and in due time the city collapsed.
